BENGALURU: A 27-year-old postgraduate medico, who developed labour pain while writing an examination last week, was rushed to hospital where she underwent a C-section to deliver a baby and wrote another exam from her hospital bed the next day.
The doctor was discharged from Kasturba Hospital, Manipal on Sunday night and is now preparing for practical exams.
After delivering a healthy baby on the night of April 2, the woman, pursuing PG diploma in obstetrics and gynaecology at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, was keen on writing the next day’s exam and sought approval to do so from the hospital bed. The college extended support to the new mother.
A spokesperson of the hospital, said, “Both the mother and baby are doing good. She was discharged on the night of April 7.”
Dr Pragna Rao, dean of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, said three written exams were held for PG diploma in obstetrics and gynaecology from April 1 to April 3. “We procured the necessary approvals to facilitate her in writing the exam from the hospital,” said Dr Rao.
The medical college and hospital refused to reveal the woman’s identity citing confidentiality. The doctor and her family couldn’t be reached.
“It’s very rare. While we were worried about her health on April 2 as she began experiencing labour pain, none of us had a clue that she could write the exam next day. As a doctor, she was well aware of her condition. She should be honoured for the courage she showed in writing an exam from her hospital bed after undergoing a C-section, which is a major surgery,” said another student from KMC.
