TRICHY: A fire broke out at Trichy Corporation’s 47-acre Ariyamangalam dump yard on Monday morning. Smoke engulfed parts of Ariyamangalam area due to the fire.
The blaze was first noticed in a portion of waste mound partitioned from rest as a part of ongoing biomining project under the Smart Cities Mission to reclaim and reuse the land.
“We suspect methane gas produced by the decades-old waste dumped here is the cause for the fire. Water is being sprayed over the waste mounds in other parts to prevent such incidents,” an official source with civic body said.
Two fire tenders were pressed into service to put out the fire. As many as 15 water tankers, including 10 from Trichy Corporation, were also pressed into service.
