Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on Monday questioned the source of funds spent on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s election rallies and asked if it was added to the election expenses of the candidates for whom Mr. Modi campaigned.

His tweets on the Prime Minister’s public rallies comes hours after he tweeted that Income Tax department was planning to raid his house to cripple the campaign of his son, Karti, who is contesting from the Sivaganga constituency.

“Is the expenditure on each PM rally being added to the election expenditure of the candidate or candidates in whose support the rally was held?” asked Mr. Chidambaram.

In a series of tweets, he claimed that expenditure incurred in public rallies of the Prime Minister is more than a wedding.

“Heard from people attending one of PM’s election rallies: how many crores of rupees are being spent on each rally? At every rally there is a pandal that is better than a rich family’s marriage pandal. There are tens of LED screens. What is the source of this huge amount of money?” he asked.

“I have been told that the I-T department has plans to raid my residence in Sivaganga constituency and in Chennai. We will welcome the search party.”

“The people are watching the excesses of this government and will deliver a fitting lesson in the election,” he added.
