It proved to be a special weekend day for schoolchildren and the public who participated in the kite festival held near the source of origin of the Shalmala here on Sunday.

This special kite festival was organised by the district SVEEP committee as part of its voter awareness programme.

The entire area wore a festive look as children, along with their parents and officials, took part with total enthusiasm and gaiety. The sky was dotted with colourful kites of different size, design and colours. Kite flyers from the city and neighbouring places participated in this one-day extravaganza.

As many as 8,000 people participated in the event and it was a visual treat to watch more than 2,000 kites ruling the sky at the Someshwar Grounds. Though the kite festival was to begin at 9 a.m., a large number of people thronged the venue much before the organisers had come. Joy filled the air once the kite festival began. Deputy Commissioner M. Deepa said that kite flying was one of most enjoyable and decent games that attracts people of all ages. The SVEEP focusses on utilising this occasion to convey the message of compulsory participation in the electoral process to strengthen the democracy, she added.
