CHANDIGARH: The syndicate at Panjab University will take up the issue of fee structure and new guidelines, proposed by a working committee for NRI admission in the university, in a meeting on April 10.

The new guidelines were recommended in a meeting of the working committee held on November 21, 2018. The committee framed guidelines for NRI admission in the university and made recommendations for admissions of NRI candidates to various university courses.

After detailed deliberation, the committee unanimously observed that a foreign national may seek admission through the international students’ office under three categories, which include candidates with nomination or sponsorship by any foreign state, embassy or authority in India under a study in India or exchange programme etc., foreign nationals or their wards, who are self-financed students and non-resident Indians (NRI) or their wards.


The agenda-item for the syndicate meeting to be held on April 10 includes issues like students, who will be admitted against NRI quota must hold basic qualification as fixed by the medical council, dental council, Bar Council of the council of India for admission to graduate courses. The rules or respective regulatory bodies shall apply as amended from time-to-time.


“NRI candidates seeking admission to any course will be required to produce test scores of the Scholastic Aptitude Test-Il (SAT-Il) with permissible combination of subjects, conducted by the Education Testing Service, Princeton, USA, for admission to undergraduate courses and Graduate Record Examination (General) (GRE) from Princeton, USA, or GMAT for admission to postgraduate courses. In case of foreign nationals (non-English speaking countries), TOEFL or IELTS scores should be produced,” read the minutes of the November 21 meeting.


Moreover, it was decided that admission to all engineering courses against NRI quota at the University Institute of Engineering Technology (UIET), Dr SSB University Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology (UICET) and the PU Regional Centre, Hoshiarpur, shall also be admissible through Direct Admissions Students Abroad (DASA) from the academic session 2018-2019.


A candidate, once admitted as NRI candidate in an undergraduate course, shall be covered under the definition of NRI for subsequent admission to any course at Panjab University. Candidates, who take admission under the NRI quota and are promoted from undergraduate to postgraduate course in the honours school framework (ongoing programme), shall not be allowed to change their category.
