Mumbai: Teachers who have completed Teacher’s Eligibility Test (TET) are demanding permanent jobs in government schools, while the state education department has informed teachers to work on temporary or contract basis to gain experience.
With a view to gain permanent employment, teachers are demanding they should be given jobs in state-run schools. Teachers revealed they do not want to work on temporary basis. Malvika Jain, a teacher, said, “We have completed our Bachelor of Education (BEd) course and have cleared the TET too. Still we are hired on temporary basis at a minimum base salary.”
In addition, contract system does not provide job security, according to teachers. Nishant Jagtap, a teacher, said, “Sometime our contract expires in six or nine months and then again we have to look for a job all over again. Also, when we are hired on contract we do not have job security unlike permanent jobs.”
Authorities of the state education department claimed teachers have to work on temporary basis to gain experience. A senior officer of the department said, “Teachers cannot work full-time on permanent basis unless they have valid work experience. We have vacancies in govt schools but we cannot hire teachers based on their degree or TET score. Teachers have to work on temporary basis to gain experience and build a profile so that they can work efficiently in state-run schools.”
