With mercury soaring, earthen pots make a comeback
Mysuru: With maximum temperature on the rise, sale of earthen pots has gone high in the city.

Keeping aside refrigerators and cool drinks, residents are heading to buy earthen pots to drink cold and fresh water every day. Given that the city is seeing highest temperature in the month of April, people have turned towards the old-school idea of storing water in earthen pots.

It is near Kalamandira on Hunsur Road, the family of Babu, a native of Gujarat, is having a good time selling earthen pots. The price of pots starts from Rs 350 and goes up to Rs 600. Varying from small, medium and large pots, the family is also selling stands to make a living. There huge pots are beautifully painted in white and other colourful designs. Like Babu, four other families from Gujarat are making a living by selling earthen pots in the city. A small pot costs Rs 300, medium-sized pot Rs 380 and large pots start from Rs 480.

Babu told TOI that they have been living in the city with 50 other members for 30 years. “With the beginning of summer, raw material for the pots is brought from Gujarat. Usually a truck gets the required mud. We make the pots here. This year, there is a rise in the sale of earthen pots as the temperature has crossed the usual mark. We are happy with the sale. At least 10 pots are sold every day,” he said.

Prasad Murthy, a resident of Hebbal, said the earthen pots even today remain a sophisticated container to store water during summer. There will be health complications if we consume cool drinks or water stored in refrigerators. It is also a fashion to keep earthen pots at home. These pots come with health benefits too, he said.
