Amid row, LIT interviews scheduled today

Nagpur: The first round of interviews for Laxminarayan Institute of Technology (LIT) is scheduled for Monday even as the Nagpur University (NU) is yet to come clean on the conflict of interest of its acting registrar Niraj Khaty, who is one of the applicants, and leak of panel members. Beside this, several irregularities surfacing in the employment notice remain mired in controversies.
Following the advertisement for 17 positions on January 24, TOI has been extensively reporting about problems plaguing the much-delayed recruitment for the premier institute. A day before the scheduled interviews, there were also talks of names of other panel members being leaked besides those for chemistry where Khaty is an applicant himself.
Vice chancellor SP Kane and Khaty haven’t replied to a single TOI query regarding the irregularities and leak of interview panel member names. Officials informed that the governor’s office has sought a report on the entire fracas from the VC which has now put him in a precarious situation.
The recruitments are being held following high court orders due to which the NU is unable to call off the Monday’s interviews even after leak of panel member names. Officials say before calling off the interviews, NU will have to inform the court, which would only invite the judiciary’s wrath.
On March 27, the NU had moved the HC seeking to postpone the interviews but failed to get respite. The petitioner’s counsel had brought to the HC notice the problems afflicting the process, evoking oral warning to NU to ensure no irregularities are committed. However, as per officials, defiant Kane and Khaty had trashed the reports that the HC took note of the acting registrar’s candidature in conflict of interest.
Besides this, it is not clear which roster system the NU has followed in advertising the posts. The distribution of positions don’t fit the ‘200-point or 13-point roster system’. In fact, in the department of Petrochemical Technology, more than 50% posts would be held by one specific reserved category.
After the roster goof-up, a row had broken out over VC Kane’s arbitrary decision to extend the deadline for inviting names for interview expert panels. Management council member Nitin Kongre had opposed the move yet the NU brushed the concerns aside.
