Bengaluru: Stall sells 600kg mutton as hundreds queue up from 2am

Public stand in que infront of Papanna mutton stall to buy mutton on the occasion of Varshadadaku in Byatarayanapura in Bengaluru BENGALURU: A video of a serpentine queue in front of a mutton stall in Byatarayanapura, off Mysuru Road, went viral on Sunday. Even as sceptics questioned the veracity of the news doing the rounds, the queue in front of Papanna Mutton Shop was for real.
The day after Ugadi, the beginning of the Hindu lunar new year, is observed as Hosa Todaku and is marked by non-vegetarian feast in Kannadiga households. This explained the steady stream of customers at Papanna Mutton Shop on Sunday. “It is the quality of the mutton that we provide which brings customers to our shop. The queue started at 2am and continued till 2pm. We sold 600kg of mutton from 50 sheep in a single day,” said Santosh S, the shop owner.
Around 9am, at least 300 people were seen waiting for their turn to buy mutton. A local shot a video of the crowd and posted it on social media which went viral.
Asked what makes his shop special, Santosh said they allowed customer to choose parts of the meat they wished to buy. “Many shops do not provide such an option. We buy sheep from Magadi, Kanakapura and Ramanagara,” he said.
Santosh said his grandfather Papanna started selling mutton and the family has continued the legacy. “My father P Manikyam inherited the business from his father and now I am taking it forward,” he added.
While a kilogram of mutton in other shops sold at Rs 540-560 a kilo, at Papanna Mutton Shop it was sold at Rs 600 per kg, which, however, was no deterrent for the hundreds waiting to feast on their favourite non-veg item.
