AGRA: The communally sensitive Lok Sabha constituency of Aligarh is set to witness high profile campaigns and rallies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and BSP supremo Mayawati in the coming days.
According to party office bearers, while PM Modi will address a rally in Aligarh on April 14, Mayawati and Rahul Gandhi are scheduled to address public rallies on April 15. Priyanka will hold a roadshow in the constituency on April 13.
PM Modi will also address a poll rally in Moradabad on April 14, said BJP’s state general secretary Govind Narain Shukla.
Shukla told TOI that the PM will address two public rallies - one each in Aligarh and Moradabad on the same day - ahead of the second phase elections which is scheduled on April 18. He said that around one lakh people are expected to attend. Preparations are being made at Aligarh’s historic Numaish ground, added Shukla.
On April 13, Priyanka will hold a 2.5-hour roadshow in the city. State general secretary of Youth Congress, Gaurang Dev Chauhan, also chairman of district campaign committee told TOI that the roadshow will start around 1 pm from Etah Chungi and will culminate at the Numaish ground. “The final route is yet to be decided, but she will be welcomed at almost 50 points,” he said, adding that the Congress president will hold a ‘Kisan Mahapanchayat’ at Khair Vidhan Sabha on April 25.
On April 15, Mayawati will address a public rally at Numaish ground, confirmed BSP’s zone coordinator Sunil Chitor.
Despite the fact that Aligarh Lok Sabha constituency has been in the limelight due to controversies related to the Aligarh Muslim University and significant Muslim population, a keen contest is expected this time with the formidable SP-BSP-RLD alliance in poll race. With Muslims (20%), OBCs (23%) and SCs (21%) constituting 64 percent of the constituency’s population, the alliance is in a strong position this time. The constituency has (36%) upper caste Hindu voters as well.
While, sitting BJP MP Satish Gautam is re-contesting from Aligarh, Congress’s Bijendra Singh and BSP-SP-RLD alliance candidate Ajit Baliyan are the main challengers.
