Coimbatore: A series of recent sexual assault cases indicates that the government, which should maintain law and order, has failed to do its job, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief Kamal Haasan said here on Sunday.
Kamal was in the city to campaign for his party candidates contesting from Pollachi and Coimbatore Lok Sabha constituencies. “It is known that the elections are not going to take place in a fair manner. So, let the police department ensure the safety of the public. The continuous incidents of sexual assaults have created outrage among the public. A lot of corrections and changes are need to be done in the society and we are here to do it,” he told reporters at the airport here.
No work is important for the government than working for the welfare of the public, Kamal said. “The ruling party should not use the police department to do its work.”
Reacting to reports that the parents of the seven-year-old girl, who was raped and murdered at Thudiyalur, were not given the postmortem report, the MNM leader said that poor people should not be made to run from pillar to post just because they have no influential contacts.
To a question on pre-poll surveys, he said that as each and every political party own a television channel, the surveys favour all. “The pre-poll surveys are to console themselves. But in one of the few surveys that was conducted fairly, MNM has found a place.”
His party would ask ‘its candidates to step down if they are found not working to fulfil the party’s promises, Kamal said.
Earlier addressing the public at Somanur, Kamal urged them not to receive cash for votes, as it is their only chance to change. “All those who have been staying away from the election should caste their votes, especially the youths.”
