Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched a scathing attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and said the ground beneath her feet was shaking.

"The 'speed breaker' Didi of Bengal is unable to sleep, she is venting all her anger on her officials and the Election Commission. If someone wants to understand what shifting of political grounds feels like, they can understand from her anger and frustration," Mr. Modi said, while addressing a rally at Cooch Behar in north Bengal.

Referring to Ms. Banerjee's remarks at the Election Commission after the transfer of four senior police officials in the State. the Prime Minister said those remarks were indicative of the fear that has gripped her, and the BJP wave in the State.

Ms Banerjee had issued a strong worded letter to the Election Commission of India on Saturday calling its decision to transfer senior police officials as " undemocratic and biased".

Unlike previous election rallies in Bengal, where Mr. Modi had targeted both Congress and the Trinamool Congress (TMC), on Sunday the Prime Minister's attack was directed only at Bengal's ruling party. During his 40-minute speech, Mr. Modi accused the West Bengal Chief Minister of standing with those wanted to divide the country and wanted "two Prime Ministers".

He evoked Jana Sangha founder Shyama Prasad Mookerjee's memory, saying that while Mr. Mookerjee, a son of Bengal, sacrificed himself for ek nishan, ek vidhan, ek pradhan” (one flag, one constitution, one leader), Ms. Banerjee was standing with those who wanted to divide the country.

The Prime Minister also referred to the Saradha and Rose Valley chit fund scams, and the Narada tapes, and promised action against those involved in these scams. On the issue of Trinamool Congress erecting another stage at the same venue where he addressed the rally, Mr. Modi called it "childish" and said it was something not acceptable in democracy. "You cannot win elections like this", he said.

Mr. Modi also charged Ms. Banerjee with protecting illegal immigrants to secure her vote bank.

“Didi has betrayed the Centre by giving protection to the intruders. This chowkidar has brought NRC and Citizenship (Amendment) Bill to drive out infiltrators. But Didi with her ‘Mahamilawati’ colleagues are trying to stop the government from pursuing them,” he said.

Sharing his plans for the development of the country, Mr. Modi said, phone calls will soon become free in the country and the charges for Internet will be the least in the world.

“Every poor has a bank account and a debit card. Women have easy access to gas connections. What seemed impossible a few years ago has been made possible by the Modi government,” he added.

Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal will be held in seven phases between April 11 and May 19.
