A short circuit in an electric wire caused fire at Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) election office near Kitchipalayam here on Saturday. The pandhal erected outside the office gutted in the incident.
According to the police, the fire occurred around midnight. People residing in the first floor of the election office and neighbours noticed the fire and immediately doused it.
Senior district party functionaries and the police reached the place and assessed the situation.
In preliminary investigation, the senior party functionaries alleged that anti-social elements and members of Opposition parties would have done it. The police collected CCTV camera visuals from the area and found that it was not a sabotage.
On inquiry, they found that electric sparks from the wire that passed through the pandhal caused the fire.
