CHANDIGARH: The residents of Palsora village on Friday staged a protest against the opening of a liquor vend at the entrance of the village. Some political parties too joined the protesters and raised slogans against the Chandigarh administration and municipal corporation.
Congress leader Bhupinder Badheri said liquor vend is close to a school and temple and the authorities should not have allowed its opening at the site. The administration should consider the genuine demands of the villagers instead of only worrying about generating revenue, he added.
Local area councillor Satish Kainth said even the allotment of site to the liquor vend is questionable. “The shop where the liquor vend has been opened belonged to the Chandigarh municipal corporation. The shop was rented out to a person and as per the rules, he can’t sublet the shop to anyone else. However, there has been a clear vioaltion of the rule in this case.”
He along with villagers have lodged a complaint in this regard to MC, following which the civic body has formed a committee to look into the matter, he added.
Meanwhile, Gurinder Singh, a villager, said a few days ago, the authorities had closed down the liquor vend but it was opened again on Friday. “We only want that the liquor vend should be immediately shifted away from the village entrance,” he added.
Requesting anonymity, a senior MC official said they have formed a committee and are looking into the matter.
