NEW DELHI: Malkit Singh (26) wanted his girlfriend to dump her children from her first marriage at a children’s home in Maharashtra and marry him. When Nisha refused, he strangled her and dumped the body in a drain near Ranhola. A fortnight after the body was found, Singh was arrested on Friday.

Singh, who was traced to a village near Kanjhawala in northwest Delhi, was in a relationship with another woman and was planning to marry her, the police said.

An ‘Om’ tattoo on Nisha’s hand had helped cops reach the colony where she used to stay. After her husband’s death five years ago, Nisha, who was from Maharashtra, started working as a household help in west Delhi and came in contact with Singh, a cab driver, while looking for a house, a neighbour told the police. Two eventually fell in love.

Singh used to visit her often but lately they used to fought frequently as the accused was putting pressure on Nisha to marry him, the police were told.

On March 20, after Nisha asked Singh to leave the house following a fight, he urged her to come to a park with him to resolve the differences. They got into an argument there as well during which he smothered her. He then dumped the body in a nearby drain. The next day, cops found it stuck in sludge.

Although Nisha’s neighbours didn’t file any police complaint, they took care of her children while looking for her in the neighbouring areas. The children have been handed over to an NGO, the police said. Singh was traced following his descriptions by neighbours. A case of murder and attempt to destroy evidences has been registered.
