The Tamil Nadu model is the best prototype healthcare delivery system in resource-limited settings in the country and is worthy of emulation by other States. It is no surprise that Tamil Nadu serves as a hub for medical tourism in the eastern part of the globe, observed Governor Banwarilal Purohit here on Saturday
After inaugurating ‘Indo-Japan Hand Meet’ on deformities and surgery of the hand, he said, “Tamil Nadu has always been an important centre for medical diagnosis and treatment. It was the first State to enact the Public Health Act. The Government General Hospital and the Government Eye Hospital in Chennai are among the oldest in Asia. The State enjoys an impressive record in the reduction of infant mortality and maternal mortality rates. The State ranks first in the country in terms of number of children immunised and takes pride in the thousands of eminent medical practitioners specialising in various fields of medicine,” Mr. Purohit said.
The event, organised by Indian Orthopaedic Association, Orthopaedic Association of South Indian States, Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association, Tiruchi Ortho Club and Indian Society for Surgery of the Hand saw an exchange of expertise between Indian and Japanese surgeons. Renowned Japanese surgeon Yoshinaka Hamida, who represented the Japanese team, imparted his expertise on unique instrumentation and joint replacement techniques.
Six surgeons - John Karruppiah, Mohammed Farook, Samson Daniel, S. Rajasabapathy, G. Balakrishnan and Yoshitaka Hamada from Japan - were conferred Lifetime Achievement awards from the Governor.
