Pune: Doctor, engineering student held in online narcotics racket

PUNE: The Pune customs department’s narcotics cell has arrested a doctor and an engineering student and busted a racket of online sales and purchase of narcotics drugs on April 3.

The duo will be in customs' custody till April 8.


The cell officials had intercepted a car in the parking premises of a mall on Ahmednagar road after receiving reliable information regarding online procurement and trafficking of psychotropic drugs.

“The frisking of the suspects and a search conducted in the car led to the recovery of white colour crystal like powder purported to be Mephedrone (MD), pink coloured triangular pills like substance purpoted to be Ectasy Pills (MDMA) and a large quantity of stamp like articles (163 nos) collectively worth Rs 8 lakh in the Indian illicit market,” said Suhail A Kazi, the customs department’s joint commissioner, in a statement issued on Saturday.

Kazi said, “The suspects in their statement have accepted wilful and conscious possession and admitted that they had purchased these drugs for sale from an online portal and the payment was made by them to suppliers through digitial payment. Their modus operandi of advertising drugs in their circle and procuring it via internet and dispatching it through courier is under investigation.”


The doctor and student were arrested under sections 22 and 8 of the Narcotics Drugs and Pyschotropic Substances Act.


“This is for the first time that we have busted racket of online purchase and sale of narcotics drus. A detailed investigation of the online suppliers and their customers to whom the drugs have been supplied in the city and the trail of digital transaction/payment is in progress,” Kazi’s statement stated.


The officials requesting anonymity said,“The drugs recovered are used by the youths in parties organised at select places. The suspects are individually involved in procuring and selling drugs to prospective customers. They got friendly around eight months ago. They were in the process of striking a deal with a prospective customer in a mall when they were taken into custody. Their questioning has revealed that there are several portals involved in selling drugs via online in India and abroad.”
