Mohali senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harcharan Singh Bhullar said police recovered eight cars — a Toyota Liva, two Maruti Swift Dzire, two Hyundai Verna, a Toyota Innova, a Maruti Swift, a Maruti Alto — and a Hero Maestro scooter from the accused.

A police team stopped a Hyundai Verna car, suspecting something amiss in the number plates in Sector 78. Equipment used to unlock vehicles — sensors of keys, lock code and cutter and drill machines — was hidden in the car. Cops took its three occupants into custody. Police said the three during interrogation revealed about the thefts.

Cops also found nine registration certificates (RCs) of “total loss” vehicles. The accused admitted they purchased “total loss” vehicles from insurance companies and sold stolen vehicles on the basis of RCs and other documents of these cars. Police said the accused used to conduct recce on a stolen scooter.

Eight cases, four from Mohali, were solved with their arrest, police said.

Main accused knew Bhola: SSP

On March 18, Sachpal, a resident of PGI, alleged his Maruti Swift Dzire car (CH-01-AX-4349) was stolen from Mystic Arch Palace, Sector 109, Raipur Kalan village (near Banur-Landra Road). A police team formed to crack the case made the arrests. A local court sent the three accused in police remand for three days. Two more suspects are under police surveillance and will arrested soon, Bhullar said.

SSP Harcharan Singh Bhullar said main accused Surjeet Singh was a co-accused in the multi-crore drug racket case with smuggler Jagdish Bhola, a former international wrestler and a sacked DSP, and used to supply stolen vehicles to him more than six years back. Bhola, who was recently sentenced to 24-year jail term in the drugs case, probably used these vehicles to supply drugs or store them. Surjeet has seven cases of dacoity, vehicle theft and robberies registered against him at various police station in Punjab, Rajasthan and Chandigarh.
