‘The Centre has betrayed the interests of the people in the last five years’

Communist Party of India (CPI) State Secretary R. Mutharasan has warned that India would become a fascist country and Prime Minister Narendra Modi would become a fascist leader if he was given another term.

Talking to reporters here on Saturday, ahead of campaigning for Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) candidate K. Navas Kani, contesting from Ramanathapuram Lok Sabha constituency, he said democracy would be totally destroyed if Mr Modi, who was already functioning in an autocratic style, was voted back to power.

One of the BJP leaders had himself said that Mr Modi would be elected back to power in the 2019 elections but after that the country would not witness elections once in five years, he said.

In Tamil Nadu, the people would forfeit all their rights on vital issues if Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami was allowed to complete the full term of the AIADMK government, he warned. The State government remained silent when the Centre betrayed the interests of the people in the last five years, he said.

Mr Mutharasan said the April 18 election in Tamil Nadu was not a fight between two political parties or two individuals but a war on policies. In the last five years, Mr Modi had acted against the Indian constitution and gave scant respect to the secular concept, he alleged. Mr Modi was in total control of autonomous institutions such as the Election Commission of India, the Reserve Bank of India, Income Tax and other central institutions and never allowed them to function independently, he alleged.

Mr Modi also miserably failed to fulfil his promises, he had made ahead of the 2014 elections such as depositing ₹15 lakh in poor people’s bank accounts after bringing black money stashed in foreign countries, provide two crore jobs a year and double the income of the farmers, he said.

While visiting Tamil Nadu, he had promised to permanently solve the fishermen issue, but the hapless fishermen continued to face problems and getting arrested by the Sri Lankan navy when they set out for fishing in the Palk Bay, he said. The Centre had also betrayed the State on issues such as the Cauvery, hydrocarbon and methane gas projects, he alleged.
