CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Saturday said a new alliance consisting of different Opposition parties would take shape after the Lok Sabha elections to keep the BJP away from power. He, however, did not elaborate on the pattern of the alliance or a possible tie-up of his party with the Congress.

Mr. Yechury was speaking at an election rally of the Left Front in support of CPI(M) candidates for the two Lok Sabha constituencies in Tripura. “I have come to appeal you to vote for the Left candidates in this very important elections,” he said.

The CPI(M) leader said the five years of BJP rule at the Centre was a “dismal episode of oppression and attacks on democratic institutions”. All the pillars of the Constitution were hit and damaged, he asserted, adding that the rights of citizens were curtailed in various ways.

Lashing out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mr. Yechury said: “People are preparing to sack the chowkidar for his all-round failures and repression.”
