UK govt approves 1.7 GW gas-fired power plant in Teesside LONDON: * The British government has given development consent to a 1.7 gigawatt combined cycle gas turbine power plant on the former site of the Teesside power station in northeast England, the UK's Planning Inspectorate said.

* The facility is being developed by Sembcorp Utilities Ltd.

* Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries increased its presence in Britain's power market last year with a 216 million pound ($282 million) acquisition of flexible energy generator UK Power Reserve.
