Sharad Pawar hits back at PM Narendra Modi, insists all is well in NCP camp

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack at the infighting within the Nationalist Congress Party, the NCP has put up a show of unity, with party president Sharad Pawar, nephew Ajit Pawar and daughter Supriya Sule coming together to insist the BJP's anti-Pawar campaign will not translate into votes.

As Sule filed her nomination papers for Baramati on Wednesday, the NCP said it will grill the Prime Minister and the ruling BJP on issues like weakening democratic institutions, unemployment, rising farmer suicides, and the impact of demonetisation on the economy.

PM Modi, who launched the BJP's campaign from Wardha on Monday, said NCP was having trouble with seat-sharing arrangements, and hinted at a dynastic war with Sharad Pawar being sidelined by his nephew. These comments evoked angry reactions from the NCP, which claimed the PM had nothing new to offer and was attempting to target the Pawar family instead.

Pawar senior had said on Tuesday that all is well within the family and even showered praise on Ajit Pawar, calling him an able administrator. He said he won't level any personal allegations against PM Modi, but would criticise him for the comments which didn't "suit the dignity of the office he holds".

Ajit Pawar then said Modi should have spoken out over current issues such as unemployment, farm distress, slow economic growth, etc., instead of attacking the Pawars.

On her part, Supriya Sule, after filing her nomination, said one can't expect PM Modi to understand familial values considering he "takes pride in being lonely". She added that it takes a long time to build relationships, but no time in breaking them.
