MADHEPURA: Former MP and RJD nominee Sharad Yadav filed his nomination papers from Madhepura parliamentary seat on Wednesday.
Addressing a public meeting after filing his papers, Sharad said, “The country as well as the Constitution is in danger. This election is neither for politicians nor for political parties, but to save the Constitution by exercising your franchise wisely.”
He also alleged that PM Narendra Modi did not fulfil even a single promise he had made before the last general elections, be it job for youth or money to the poor. He also lashed out at chief minister Nitish Kumar for betraying the mandate by quitting RJD-led Mahagathbandhan and joining BJP-led NDA in 2017.
“Nitish had said he would die but never join hands with BJP. But he betrayed the people of Bihar,” Sharad said.
Madhepura is set for a triangular contest this time with expelled RJD MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav and Dinesh Chandra Yadav of JD(U) in the fray. Pappu and Dinesh have already filed their papers.
The parliamentary constituency is comprised of 11 blocks of Madhepura district and four of Saharsa, including the divisional headquarters.
The constituency also had a triangular contest between Sharad, Pappu and Vijay Singh Kushwaha. Sharad, who was a JD(U) candidate, had lost to RJD nominee Pappu Yadav. Vijay of the BJP was third.
Political observers say the scenario has changed as Pappu is contesting this election from his own Jan Adhikar Loktantrik Party, while RJD has fielded Sharad on its symbol.
Dinesh Chandra Yadav, a minister in the Nitish Kumar government, is contesting for the first time from this seat. He reportedly enjoys good support in four blocks of Saharsa district. Dinesh belongs to Kishnaut sub-caste of Yadav. The region has known rivalry between Kishnaut and Majhraut Yadavs.
Pappu had a broad margin of winning votes from Mahishi block (Sattarkataiya) in Saharsa district last time. Sharad, on the other hand, banks on traditional RJD voters. A large number of RJD workers were present in the Sharad’s rally after filing of his papers.
