Matilda was only two when her Australian dad Heath died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in a New York hotel on January 22, 2008, aged 28.
As the teens are notoriously a rough time in a parent-child relationship, the four-time Oscar-nominee has braced herself for a change but things are still going swimmingly between the two.
Michelle explained: 'Every morning we wake up and I look to see if the transformation has happened and if it’s turned into the next level that I keep hearing about, but so far, we’re not there yet.'

No doubt Heath's presence is still felt today even over a decade after his untimely death as Kate Bosworth posted a sweet tribute to him on Instagram.
She shared a sweet black and white photo of the talented actor as she opened up about their bond writing: 'Doesn’t seem so long ago we were all running around LA, shotgunned into Hollywood + popping off the new millennium’s cork, having a laugh. It was a crazy time.
'I was literally straight out of high school, feeling young & super shy and he was always so sweet within a surreal scene. I really, really would have loved to have known Heath today, at 40. No limits on what he would have accomplished.

'Here is what I remember: he was sensitive, gentle, kind, wickedly funny. Extraordinarily special. Time goes by, his image still a teenage heartthrob. And his work. So brilliant + honest & he was just getting started.'
Bosworth, 36, explained that it was important to remember the human being that he was.
She concluded: 'I was on the outer orbit. Imagine those close to the sun. Thinking of all the people who knew and loved him on this day. Man, you made one hell of a mark. xo'

Michelle has been a single mom since Heath's death - but the Dawson's Creek alum wed indie rock musician Phil Elverum, 40, in July.
It came as a surprise to their fans as Michelle, who is notoriously private, and Phil had never gone public with their relationship.
The two met through a mutual friend and married in a secret ceremony in the Adirondacks in upstate New York, according to Vanity Fair.
Their nuptials were witnessed by a few friends and their kids — Michelle's Matilda and Phil's daughter Agathe, three, who was an infant when her mother Geneviève Castrée died of pancreatic cancer in 2016.
