Most schools will break up on Friday, and it is expected to be the busiest day for traffic, as 5.3 million getaway trips will battle for road space with commuter and commercial traffic.

With temperatures dropping ahead of the Easter break, motorists especially those making long journeys, are advised to check their vehicles before setting off.

A double wave of getaway traffic is expected – firstly at the end of this week and then again two weeks later for the four-day weekend. A second wave of congestion is expected over the Easter bank holiday weekend two weeks later.

No weather issues are expected but holidaymakers and travelers should be prepared for short, sharp April showers. There could be some snow on higher ground in the North.

Checking oil, coolant, together with tyre tread depth and pressures, can mean the difference between a long yet completed journey and a disrupted and inconvenient one that can ruin the getaways.
