Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu addresses IGNOU’s 32nd convocation

Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu has sought inculcation of values, morals and ethics in India’s education system.

Higher education system should be overhauled so that it caters to the fast changing requirements of 21st century, he said while addressing the 32nd convocation ceremony of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) held at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University here.

‘New India’ concept

Mr. Naidu said that “every body must strive to build a new India that is free of poverty, illiteracy, fear, corruption, hunger and discrimination”. The Vice President called for a check on excessive commercialisation and poor governance in private and government-funded institutions.

Quality should be ensured in all educational institutions, but they should also preserve education’s traditional base, he added.

Tradition and modernity

Since India is rapidly advancing towards a knowledge-based society, it should preserve its traditional knowledge base and integrate it with modern educational system of the country, he said.

A total of 2.02 lakh students of IGNOU received their certificates, diplomas and degrees from the university this year.

IGNOU has a network of 3,500 study centres, 56 regional centers and 11 recognised regional centres for the Indian army, navy and Assam Rifles across the country, apart from 26 overseas study centres. The student strength in the university stands at 32 lakh.
