With less than 10 days for the first episode of the final season to start, viewers tell us how they are planning to celebrate the beginning of the end.
Chennai:
An enemy that doesn’t tire, stop or feel… with the sole purpose of defeating the White Walkers and surviving the ‘night so dark and full of terrors’, Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, the Stark sisters and others prepare for the final battle. This is what fans will get to see in the ultimate season of Game Of Thrones (GoT), a TV show inspired by a book series of the same name. Since the show’s beginning in 2012, it has garnered millions of fans across the globe and has gone on to become one of the highest rated programs ever.
With Season Eight starting on April 14, fans from the city are going all out to celebrate. “Join hands with the Seven Kingdoms and meet us at the Old ‘Vault’ Tavern,” reads DJ Zen’s post on Facebook. “By that, he means that he and I are hosting a GoT-theme night titled Dracarys at The Vault Bar Stock Exchange located in T Nagar.
On Saturday night, we’re having a theme party and cosplay based on the show to celebrate the beginning of the new season,” shares Vinod Karthik, who is the in-house DJ at the resto-bar.
House parties have become a popular option too for many youngsters, like Mohita and her brother Rohit. “Right from our aunts to the younger kids, everyone’s addicted to the show. In fact, we’ve gone crazy with the merchandise and have everything right from the horn-shaped beer mugs, to T-shirts, bags, fridge magnets and more,” she says. So, the family will be getting together on Sunday to watch the first episode together.
“In fact, we even named our Great Dane puppy as Hodor and the pooch has turned out to be just like the character — large but affectionate,” smiles Shreemath Mandrayar, the duo’s cousin. Along with siblings Ginger and Simba, Hodor has an Instagram account too called hodor_gingers_simba – the tail of four pups.
When asked what they feel might happen in the last season, “We think everyone will die! Mokkai vaangaporom (we’re going to be made fools) at the end of it all. Actually, I’m paranoid about what I’m going to do once the show ends,” Rohit laughs. And if there’s one character that they wish doesn’t die, “It’ll be Tyrion Lannister, because I really like his sense of humour,” he adds.
The previous season ended on a high with one of Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons turning “white”. The final shot of the beast suddenly opening its steely blue eyes sent chills down many people’s spines. Aishwarya Sankar, a 25-year-old sales professional, tells us, “Because of the way S7 ended, the first episode of S8 is going to be so exciting! Arya and Sansa will finally meet Daenerys and get to see the other two dragons, and Jon will find out he’s a Targaryen,” she gushes.
It’s quite ironic that she’s eagerly awaiting the show, because, “Honestly, I never liked it much when it first came out. I got bored after two episodes and had completely stopped but my friends were so hooked to it that after the fifth season, they forced me to re-watch it,” she says.
Aishwarya ended up binge watching all five seasons within a week and caught up with the sixth! “Over the past two years (gap between S7 and S8) I’ve re-watched the entire thing twice and yesterday, I began watching S7 all over again,” she says before turning back to her laptop.
