New Zealands paid for a mother-of-twos grocery bill at a supermarket after the woman forgot her purse at home.

Ardern, whose compassionate response to the Christchurch mosque shootings last month was praised around the world, confirmed making the payment and said during a press conference on Thursday that she paid for the woman's shopping "because she was a mother".

"Just when you think couldn't get any more lovely, low key and authentic.... she goes and pays for your groceries at the supermarket, because you've got your shopping, have two kids with you and are about to put it all back as you forgot your wallet," the unnamed mother wrote in a now deleted post, stuff.co.nz reported.

In the post, the woman also said she tried to explain to her children how the had just bought their groceries.

"All they cared about was how silly mummy was forgetting her wallet. lost on them," she was quoted as saying by stuff.co.nz.

The woman's friend, Helen Burness, took to to reveal the Prime Minister's good deed. "Like we didn't love her enough, paid for my friends' shopping in the supermarket the other day when she had forgotten her purse and had two screaming kids in tow."
