Thangkabalu, Rahul's Tamil translator and star of hilarious memes, put on Wayanad duty

The Congress has put KV Thangkabalu in charge of its campaign in Kerala's Wayanad, where Rahul Gandhi is contesting his second race of this year's Lok Sabha election -- the first being in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh.

He soared to Internet stardom by taking up translation duty for Rahul Gandhi. Now, the Congress wants him to help the boss win an election in Wayanad.

Meet KV Thangakabalu, 69, a former Tamil Nadu Congress chief who left netizens howling last month when he translated the party president's speech into Tamil for voters in Kanyakumari.

If accuracy was an objective, he was awful.

For example, when Rahul Gandhi said this -- "...and that is why we respect the people of Tamil Nadu" -- Thangkabalu turned to his mic and declared that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the "enemy of the Tamil people". There were memes aplenty, like this one.

Now, the Congress has put Thangkabalu in charge of its campaign in Kerala's Wayanad, where Rahul Gandhi is contesting his second race of this year's Lok Sabha election, the first being in Amethi.

Rahul filed his nomination papers today and vowed not to criticise the Communist Party of India-Marxist, an rival of the Congress party in Kerala whose Left Democatic Front alliance currently governs the state.

"Take care of him Wayanad," said Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rahul's sister and Congress general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh East (home, by the way, to Amethi).

"He wont let you down".
