The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) started pumping an additional 10 mld (million litres a day) to the city from Tuesday to cater to the higher water demand.

With this, the total volume pumped by KWA from its Aruvikkara plants has touched 280 mld. Anticipating a increased demand during April, the KWA had decided to increase production from its 86-mld and 74-mld plants at Aruvikkara.

The arrangements were completed in 15 days. A heavy-duty pump was transported from Kappukad, Neyyar, to the location on the Karamana river from where water is sourced for the 86- and 74-mld plants. KWA also had to lay an additional 600 metres of pipeline for carrying the water.

On Monday, the KWA had pumped an additional 5 mld to the city region. The pump was originally deployed in Kappukad during the 2017 drought when KWA was forced to depend on the Neyyar for city supply after the water levels at Peppara dipped alarmingly.
