CHENNAI: A 44-year-old man, who was brought for questioning, attempted suicide by slitting his throat at the Koyambedu police station on Tuesday night.

Police said Govindaraj of Perumal Koil Street in Nerkundram, who runs a roadside eatery near the Koyambedu market, attacked his wife Kavitha, 32, during a quarrel on March 30. Hearing her cries for help, neighbours rescued the woman and handed over Govindaraj to the Koyambedu police.

Based on a complaint from Kavitha, police begun investigations and found that Govindaraj assaulted her every day. Police booked him on charges of domestic violence and women harassment.

At the police station, while officers were preparing to produce him before the magistrate, Govindaraj sought permission and went to the toilet. There he slit his throat with a knife that he had brought from home. Govindaraj had hid it inside the bathroom before he was called inside the police station.

When Govindaraj did not return after a while, a police constable went looking for him in the toilet where he found the man bleeding. The man was given first aid and police rushed him to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital where he is undergoing treatment.

Govindaraj is out of danger said police. An investigating officer said he would be remanded after being discharged from the hospital.
