General Elections 2019

From plush housing society to slums, tours constituency to interacts with voters

From students to slum dwellers and from the middle class to the rich, Milind Deora, the Mumbai South candidate of the Congress, is leaving no stone unturned in his campaign for the Lok Sabha elections. Mr. Deora will take on Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant in the contest.

Interacting with students about the Congress manifesto at an event on Wednesday, Mr. Deora said, “The manifesto is designed meticulously and concentrates on job creation in rural areas, which would reduce problems caused due to migration and shift stress from infrastructure of the city.”

Urging the youth to participate in politics and governance by casting their vote with an informed opinion, Mr. Deora stressed upon issues such as the Congress’s promises of 33% reservation for women on Lok Sabha, and tackling pollution-related problems in the city.

‘Change in governance’

In another meeting with voters at Empress Court, Mr. Deora said raising the standard of Mumbai is his top priority. “Be it potholes or poor infrastructure, we need a change in governance [to deal with the problems],” he said. “People do want change, and if change is required then people ought to elect those who understand them and those who are secular,” he said. Mr. Deora promised to raise issues that matter to the people in Parliament, if elected.

In the evening, the former MP led a door-to-door campaign at the Shivshakti Nagar slum in Cuffe Parade. “The area is facing lack of infrastructure, low water supply, frequent power cuts and poor hygiene. It is essential to bring in complete change,” he said.
