Surat: Raids were carried out by food inspectors and officials of health department of Surat Municipal Corporation at 13 units unauthorizedly manufacturing packaged drinking water in the city on Thursday.
As these plants didn’t have licences and had not been certified by BIS, they were sealed by the local authorities, sources said. Around 15,000 litres of drinking water was being supplied in the market on a daily basis by each plant. A food inspector told TOI, “These establishments didn’t have licences. Their packaged water could lead to outbreak of waterborne diseases and cause stomach ailments to people.”
The officials also raided 28 shops in MG Market and seized 630kg of mangoes that had been ripened with carbide powder. They destroyed mangoes and seized 40kg of carbide powder. They collected administrative charges amounting to Rs14,500 from the shopkeepers.
