As per the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, in the last five years, the annual growth of Australians visiting Sri Lanka was 10.7 percent.
Mr. Perera stated that on the cricket pitch, the competition between the two countries had definitely played a role in endorsing the country as a vacation destination for Australians.
However, Mr. Perera said he anticipated to change that.
“We are targeting Australia more and more because more Australians are travelling to Sri Lanka nowadays,” he said.
Mr. Perera stated that there were several factors contributing to the development in Australian tourist numbers in his country.
“If you have been to the same location forever, you get fed up — that’s happened with Bali,” he said.
As Indonesia experienced 4 percent drop in Australian visitors, China, Singapore and Japan dominated as travel destinations for Australian visitors from January 2017 to January 2018, with an average growth of 8.9 percent.
In 2017, Thailand experienced a decline of 3.7 percent of Australian tourists; visitor number did rebound 7.7 percent the following year.
