Alleged BEd exam racket: Exam controller Tiwari resigns over sample review issue

Indore: Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) exam controller Ashesh Tiwari did what he said. He put in his papers a day after he threatened to step down from the post if vice chancellor Dr Narendra Dhakad ordered the sample review of answer books of BEd second semester exams. However, he gave an excuse for his resignation.

“I did enough of administrative work and it is time for me to return to my main responsibility, which is teaching,” said Tiwari who is basically a faculty with IET.  He was given additional responsibility of exam controller in 2014 by the then vice chancellor D P Singh. Tiwari had a successful career until he came under lens over BEd second semester exam results issue.

The pass percentage was 96, which raised many eyebrows in the university and result was withheld. DAVV conducted review of only Hindi subject answer books and found grave irregularities. Totaling mistakes was found in 52 out of 1400 answer books reviewed after which the VC ordered sample review of all subjects answer books even as exam controller Ashesh Tiwari opposed the move threatening to resign from the post.
“I am not in favour of sample review of answer books. If the university still wants to proceed with it, I should resign as exam controller,” Tiwari had said in a closed door meeting with vice chancellor, registrar Anil Sharma and others on Tuesday.  When his threat was overlooked and sample review was ordered, he tendered resignation on Wednesday.

Sample review of answer books begins; report expected today
Confidential department of Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) on Wednesday started sample review of answer books of BEd second semester exams, a day after vice chancellor Dr Narendra Dhakad ordered it.  “Examiners were called at the evaluation centre on UTD campus for review work. Around 30 per cent of samples were reviewed by evening. Remaining samples will be reviewed on Thursday and then report will be submitted to the VC,” sources in DAVV said.

Dhakad had ordered for sample review of answer books after it was discovered that pass percentage in the exam is 96.  Taken aback by the pass percentage, DAVV withheld the results and ordered review of Hindi subject answer books. On receiving VC’s order, deputy registrar (confidential) Rachna Thakur seized samples of answer books.  She will give report to VC once review is completed.

“If any significant variation in original marks and review marks is found, then all the answer books will be evaluated again,” Dhakad said.  Generally, the BEd exam results range between 65 and 70 per cent but this year the pass percentage stood at 96, which surprised many in DAVV.   It was suspected that some DAVV employees of evaluation centre leaked the names of examiners to college directors and students who approached the examiners and obtained desired marks.

“I didn’t receive Tiwari’s resignation. If he resigns, I will not accept it as his services are required as exam controller. I don’t doubt his honesty.”
