NEW DELHI: A French woman became the latest victim of bike-borne snatchers on Thursday. The incident took place near south Delhi’s Kalindi Colony. The woman tried to chase the men who snatched her mobile phone, but couldn’t catch them. Confirming the developments, an officer said a case was registered at the New Friends Colony police station.
In her statement to the police, the victim, Ayla Boukerou, said she stepped out of her hotel at NFC and hired an auto-rickshaw. The incident took place at CV Raman Marg in front of Kalindi Colony. “Two men on a motorcycle started following my auto. One of them suddenly snatched my phone and the two sped away,” she said.
Boukerou said as she had only recently bought an Indian SIM card, she didn’t remember her number and that her phone was password-protected. The police have registered the case under IPC sections 356 (assault or use of criminal force in commission of a crime), 379 (theft) and 34 (common intention). Investigating teams are scanning CCTV footage. Police have also contacted the auto-rickshaw driver and taken his statement.
As per police data, roughly 16 incidents of snatching are reported in the city every day.
