Surat: A senator of Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) approached district election officer on Thursday alleging violation of model code of conduct, which is in force in view of Lok Sabha elections, by university officials.
Dr Dhanesh Vaidhya, a kidney specialist, has alleged in his letter to district election officer that by appointing a senator in-charge dean of medical faculty, university officials have violated the mode code of conduct. The post has been vacant since January 24 ever since the term of K N Bhatt as dean ended. Dr Chindu Chaudhary was appointed in-charge dean on April 2.
“The university officials did not appoint anyone for so long and chose to make the appointment at a time when the model code of conduct is in force,” said Vaidhya, who is senator since 2012. “The officials are not only violating the model code of conduct, but making a joke of the university statute and ordinance,” said another senator.
Vaidhya in another letter to the university has objected to the appointment of Chaudhary as in-charge dean of medical faculty. “Out of seven members from medical faculty in the senate, the university has selected the junior most senator as in-charge dean. This is clear violation of statutes of VNSGU,” he has said. Several issues relating to medical faculty have been pending before the university because of administrative lapses, sources said, adding that recently viva of optometry course had to be postponed because it was unable to appoint examiners. University vice-chancellor Shivendra Gupta was not available for his comments.
A few days ago, election officials had stopped distribution of NaMo E-tablets to students in the university after receiving a complaint from Aslam Cyclewala, a Congress councillor. Bhavesh Ravari, a senator, also complained to election officials against university administration for holding senate meeting to announce proposed projects when the model code of conduct was in force.
