PATNA: A slain JD(U) leader’s minor son was killed after being kidnapped for ransom of Rs 50 lakh as kidnappers wanted to recover money lost in IPL betting. Police have arrested four youths, aged between 18 and 23 years, for their "involvement".

Rahul Singh Patel (14), son of Surendra Singh Patel who had been shot dead just before his birth in 2004, was a student of Class VIII in Kendriya Vidyalaya in Siwan.

Rahul was kidnapped when he had gone out of his residence to play with friends at village Pakdi Bangali under Mahadeva police outpost in Siwan on Wednesday evening.

His body, with throat slit, was recovered by police from an open ground at Babnauli village which is around five kilometres from his residence in the wee hours of Thursday.

Siwan SP Naveen Chandra Jha said that the arrested youths were identified as Vicky Kumar, Abhishek Kumar, Abhinav Kumar and Pappu Kumar. “All used to play cricket with the slain boy,” he said.

Jha said conspiracy to kidnap Rahul was hatched after Vicky and Abhinav lost around Rs 50,000 in IPL betting. He said Vicky and Pappu were maternal cousins.

“Rahul’s mother had twice been elected as district board member,” he said.

Jha said that the boy’s family received only one ranson call of Rs 50 lakh at around 7.30pm after which kidnappers switched off the phone.

“I received a call at 8.44pm after which investigation began immediately. Vicky was the first to be picked up by police. He had used a cellphone for making the ransom call which he had snatched from few youths after in December last year,” he said.

Jha said that Vicky broke down before police at around 2.30am on Thursday and on his confession, the boy’s body was recovered.

“Vicky’s trouser with along with a sharp-edged weapon used for murder, both with blood stains, were also recovered by police from his residence,” he said.

Jha said prima facie it seems that the boy was murdered even before police was contacted by family members.

“Vikcy and others might have developed fear of getting caught as the boy knew them very closely following which they murdered him,” he added.
