BENGALURU: The Bengaluru Smart City Limited (BSCL) is all set to give a complete facelift to the iconic Krishnarajendra (KR) Market. If all goes according to its plans, the redevelopment will be completed in two years.

The ambitious Rs 50 crore project seeks to give a shopping mall-like makeover to the bustling market.

Only last week, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had drawn the ire of the Karnataka high court for not taking adequate fire safety measures in KR Market. Assuring the court of prompt action, the civic agency has undertaken a massive encroachment removal drive in the area.

BBMP commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad, who is also managing director of BSCL, explained: “We want every citizen to feel like visiting KR Market to shop. We will provide ample facilities, including an exclusive foot overbridge (FOB) for pedestrians from Chickpet Metro Station to KR Market.”

Prasad said BSCL had already floated tenders for the revamp before the poll code came into force. Bidders can participate till May 18 and BSCL would complete the procedure by June. The work may begin in July.

According to Prasad, Namma Metro would play a crucial role in enhancing the market’s profile. “Once people get down at the Metro station, they will have access to the pedestrian ramp to directly enter KR Market’s second floor, from where it will be extended to reach the BMTC bus station,” he elaborated.

“The mutton market and post office building will be redesigned. The KR Market building will be equipped with elevator ramps and the top floor will be converted into a food court,” he added.

Exclusive fire substation

The commissioner said putting in place fire safety measures is their top priority and a driveway, eight metres in width, will be built for fire tenders in case of emergencies.

“We will spend around Rs 25 lakh on establishing a fire substation on the market premises, which will have 24 people working round the clock. The substation will be owned by BBMP and we will employ fire brigade staff on deputation basis,” he explained.

The BBMP plans to spend Rs 60 lakh on enhancing fire safety measures. “More than 1,800 sprinkler points will be provided and 150 smoke detectors installed,” Prasad added.

30 marshals to monitor encroachments

BSCL has decided to take the help of marshals to ensure evicted encroachers don’t return to KR Market.
