A four-member gang posing as Income Tax officers escaped with Rs 3 lakh in cash, gold, silver articles and mobile phones from a grocery shop owner’s house in Korattur on Tuesday.

Saying that they have permission to raid his house and the shop, they downed the shutters of the shop and took Sivaprakasam to his house on the first floor of the same building. “They checked the cupboard and ‘seized’ Rs 3 lakh in cash and other valuables,” said the police.
They told Sivaprakasam to collect the valuables at the Income Tax office in Nungambakkam and left the place. However, Sivaprakasam later found out from the Income Tax office that they did not carry out any such raid. He realised that he has been cheated and lodged a complaint at the Korattur police station. A case has been registered and further investigation is on.
According to sources, a car pulled up in front of the grocery shop that belong to M Sivaprakasam in Korattur around 2 pm. Four men, who got down from the car, told Sivaprakasam that they were coming from Income Tax Department.
