NEW DELHI: Clad in lungis and kurtas, sleuths of Delhi Police averted the uprooting of another ATM by arresting the kingpin of a Mewat-based gang in southwest Delhi’s Uttam Nagar on Monday night.
The accused, Mohammad Aslam, a proclaimed offender, himself walked up to the policemen mistaking them to be Mewat residents as they were dressed in a similar fashion.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse said that a team led by ACP Rajender Singh laid the trap for Aslam after getting a tip-off that he would conduct a recce of the ATM. The elusive criminal had been looting ATMs since 2012.

When Aslam approached the cops in civvies and introduced himself, they told him they were part of a new gang based in Nuh. As the conversation proceeded, it got confirmed that he was their intended target. The policemen reportedly surprised Aslam by saying “April Fool Banaya” while nabbing him.

During interrogation, Aslam revealed that when he used to get caught earlier, he would tell the policemen a different name and portray as a first-time offender.

Aslam came into the limelight after his gang attempted to uproot an ATM in northwest Delhi’s Maurya Enclave in 2012. The gang had to abandon the plan as the security guard at the kiosk fired at them, killing one man. Aslam was later arrested, but in 2017 he stopped attending the court hearings and was declared a proclaimed offender. Since then, he has executed numerous ATM robberies across Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.

Investigating officers said that he had recently moved his operations back to Delhi. This could be the reason behind the recent spate of ATMs being uprooted in southwest Delhi.

A team led by inspector Naveen Kumar had been trailing him to ascertain his involvement in the cases.

The accused told police that he and his gang members would shortlist the ATMs during the day after observing their security features. Aslam would go at night to check if it was safe to move in and then execute the heist.

A manhunt has been launched to nab his associates.
