AGRA: A 25-year-old woman police constable sustained severe burn injuries on her face and upper parts of her body after four car-borne youths threw acid on her early Thursday morning.
The incident took place around 4.30am while Neelam Sharma was going for her duty at Krishna Janam Bhoomi temple in Mathura. The victim had come out of her rented accommodation and was walking towards the temple when the youths accosted her. According to police, one of the four persons, Sanjay Singh, who was known to the constable, threw acid on her and ran away.
Local residents gathered there after listening to her screams. They immediately informed her housemate, Neetu, another woman constable, who called the police control room. The victim was rushed to the district hospital from where she was referred to Agra for better treatment.
She is admitted in a private hospital's ICU with over 40 percent burn injuries. According to doctors, she is under observation as her condition is critical.
According to police, Sanjay was a close friend of the victim, but due to some reasons their marriage could not materialize. Following this, Neelam stopped talking to him and changed her mobile number.
The suspect, however, managed to get the phone number allotted to himself. When Neelam learnt about it, she confronted the suspect. Both of them hail from Bulandshahar.
Mathura SSP Satyarth Anirudh Pankaj told TOI that a case has been registered against four persons including Sanjay Singh, Sonu and two unidentified persons under section 326 A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid), 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC. He said that they will be arrested soon.
