LokSabha 2019: Parsis in the city want a strong government

Pune: Around 6,000 to 8,000 Parsis live in the city, which is one-tenth of the total Parsi population in the country. The community in the city feels that the future government should work for national interest and favours a strong majority government over a coalition government.

“The current government led by PM Modi has done some good work for national interest. I won’t say that all the policies of the current government are right, like demonetisation which created lot of problems for the public. But overall, Modi has emerged as a strong leader and made India a global face. We can’t judge the current government’s performance in mere five years. Look at the country’s population. It is not possible to deal with the existing corruption, stabilise the economy, provide employment and food supply to everyone in only five years’ time. We need to give time to them,” said Hormaz Master, a Bhavani Peth resident.

He said, “The current government started some great initiatives like Swachh Bharat and building toilets. It is basic, but unfortunately the basics were missing from our country.”

“One of the major issues for our country is terrorism and the current government has taken a strong stand on that and worked in the interest of national security,” he added.

Yezdi Batliwala, a Lulla Nagar resident said, “The current government has been proactive more than common Indian citizens and has done some good work. It’s not always the responsibility of the government, but citizens also play an important role.”

He said, “The policies of the current government has been in favour of people, although some sectors did suffer due to demonetisation, but sometime each of us has to face problem for national interest.”
He said it is important that a strong majority government should come to power so that it can provide stability, and not a coalition government which will bring unstablitity.

Marazban K Irani, a resident of Modi Colony said, “The current government has done some good work, like implementing Goods and Service Tax (GST) which helped in eliminating all other taxes. Implementation of RERA has helped in safeguarding the interests of buyers and builders. There have been drawbacks like demonetisation, but the common and honest man was least troubled because of it.”

“We need a majority and strong government like we have seen in the last five years. A strong government brings stability unlike a coalition which is unstable and the decision depends on different parties and their individuals,” added Irani.
On the other hand, Viraf Daboo, a businessman, who runs a manufacturing unit, said, “The current government has done good work but they haven’t fulfilled all their promises. They did bring discipline, but they have not done much work in strengthening the economy of the country.”

He added, “We need a government that can focus on issues like job creation, creating infrastructure and who can give importance to industries. A coalition government formed with two to three parties can be an alternative and can bring stability. Too many parties coming for coalition will not be a solution,” added Daboo.
