Indore: Exam controller offers to resign as VC orders for sample review

Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) exam controller Ashesh Tiwari on Tuesday offered to step down from the post as vice chancellor Dr Narendra Dhakad ordered for sample review of answer books of BEd second semester exams, which came under lens when discovered that the pass percentage is 96. “I am not in favour of sample review of answer books. If the university still wants to proceed with it, I should resign as exam controller,” said Tiwari in a closed door meeting with vice chancellor, registrar Anil Sharma and others on Tuesday.

Tiwari’s argument was that there was no irregularity in the evaluation of answer books and the issue was made out of nothing. He stated that the previously also pass percentage was high but at the time no issue was made. To substantiate his claim, he put forth results of semester exams held in 2016 and 2017. He claimed that pass percentage in 2016 exam was around 94 and 2017 exam 79.

However, sources claimed that the pass percentage in 2016 exam was 76 which increased to 94 after revaluation of answer books. Dhakad pacified Tiwari but he did not revoke orders for sample review of answer books stating the university should come out clean in the case. Unfolding the past, BEd second semester exam results shook DAVV as pass percentage turned out to be 96.

Examination committee recommended for review of answer books before announcement of the results. However, only 1400 answer books of Hindi subject were reviewed in which totaling mistake were found in 52 answer books. This raised fingers on the varsity and pressure mounted on it for complete review of answer books. It is believed that the names of examiners were leaked to BEd college directors and students who approached them and got good marks in exams.

RACHNA THAKUR SEIZES ANSWER BOOKS FOR REVIEW

After receiving orders from the VC, deputy registrar (confidential) Rachna Thakur immediately swung into action and reached evaluation centre on DAVV. She took samples of 25 to 30 answer books of each subjects and sealed them for review. Meanwhile, DAVV executive council member Alok Dawar informed Raj Bhawan about the alleged racket. He stated that the sample review of answer books should be conducted on the UTD campus itself. “The teachers should be called at evaluation centre and answer books should be evaluated in the surveillance of CCTV cameras,” he stated. The VC stated that all necessary steps will be taken to restore trust of people in DAVV.

ASHESH TIWARI RECOMMENDED ACTION

Exam controller Ashesh Tiwari, who is rejecting charges of irregularity in evaluation of answer books, himself had recommended for “blacklisting” the examiners who were found to be making mistake in totaling of marks. In his recommendation, Tiwari had stated that the examiners who made totaling mistake should not be given answer books for review in future. On Tuesday, he stated that totaling mistake should not be taken as serious irregularity. Totaling mistakes in 52 out of 1400 copies could be a regular affair in evaluation process, he added.
