Gold bricks worth Rs 7.8 crore seized from four in Lalru

MOHALI: The district police on Tuesday confiscated 28 kg gold worth Rs 7.80 crore from Lalru. The suspects told cops that they had procured gold from South Africa and were taking it to Hamirpur in Himachal.
According to the police, the suspects have been identified as Rakesh Kumar of Kardi village, Balbir Chand of Dobad Kallan village, Sanjey Kumar of Baliana village and Jaswant Singh of Gewda in Rajasthan. They said that they worked for a company, which is based in Hamirpur.
Meanwhile, cops said that they had laid a naka near Charmarhi village and intercepted an SUV car (KA-01-MJ-2551). Upon search, gold bricks were found from the vehicle. The accused also failed to show the documents needed for carrying gold.
Simranjit Singh, deputy superintendent of police (DSP), said following the seizer they registered a DDR at Lalru police station and informed to Income Tax and GST departments.
"The suspects told us that the gold was imported from South Africa and they were taking it to Hamirpur.
They added that someone delivered it to them at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.
Last five cases
On March 27, directorate of revenue intelligence seized gold worth Rs 95 lakh from a passenger at Chandigarh international airport.
On March 25, diamond studded gold jewellery worth Rs 1. 58 crore was seized from two persons in Mataur.
On February 4, two persons were caught with diamond studded gold jewellery at the airport.
On September 19, 2018, american diamond studded gold and silver jewellery worth Rs 5.95 crore was seized by the Mohali police.
On December 17, 2017, diamond studded gold Jewellery worth Rs 4.71 lakh was caught at the UT airport.
