Key accused in plotting filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt’s murder deported from US

A 46-year-old Indian national, key accused in the 2014 cases of alleged conspiracy to kill Bollywood director Mahesh Bhatt and firing on film-maker Karim Morani was deported to India from the US on 2nd March. He had been apprehended in the United States and has been in the custody of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement since September 2017 for illegally staying in the country. The Mumbai Police in its charge sheet alleged that members of a gang opened fire at producer Morani over a dispute about overseas rights of the Bollywood film 'Happy New Year', produced by the Morani brothers in 2014. Later that year, the same set of accused were arrested while preparing an attack on Mahesh Bhatt. And it was only during interrogation, that the police found out the same accused were also involved in the firing on Morani.
