NEW DELHI: The national president of Bahujan Samaj Party, Mayawati, became the first scheduled caste chief minister of an Indian state in 1995. At the age of 39, she was also the youngest chief minister in the history of Uttar Pradesh, until that point.
In 1997 and 2002, she again became the chief minister with the help of outside support from the BJP. But her third term lasted just over a year after the BJP withdrew support. In 2007 assembly elections, Mayawati returned to power by winning 206 of the 403 seats. In 2012 assembly elections, her party lost majority to the Samajwadi Party.
She first won a Lok Sabha seat contesting from Bijnor constituency in 1989. In 2012, she was elected to the Rajya Sabha but she resigned in July 2017 after complaining that her voice was being muzzled in the Upper House. The BSP leader will not contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls but has hinted that she could still be in the running for the prime minister's post.
A dalit icon, Mayawati is revered by millions of dalits not only in Uttar Pradesh but also across the country. During her tenure as the chief minister, she commissioned several monuments and parks dedicated to Buddhist, Hindu, Dalit/OBC icons, including BSP party founder Kanshi Ram and herself for which she was heavily criticised.
The Bahujan Samaj Party is contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in alliance with the Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal in UP.
The general election is going to start on April 11 and will continue till May 19. Polling on the 80 seats in the state will be held in seven phases.
