KOLKATA: The Customs department at Kolkata airport has confiscated American currency worth Rs 1.6 crore in separate hauls, both from passengers travelling in Biman Bangladesh Airlines, within a span of 24 hours.

On Tuesday, Bangladeshi national Sajibur Rahman was stopped by Customs officers while attempting to board Dhaka-bound Biman Bangladesh flight BG192 shortly before noon. A large stash of $48,000 was concealed in a black trolley bag that had been checked-in. But the money was detected during the inline baggage scan and the information passed on to Customs officers.

Earlier on Monday, more than four times the amount was confiscated from two Myanmar nationals while boarding the same flight. Hawa Bibi and Sk Mohsin were carrying $180,000 concealed in their checked-in luggage. Again, the currency notes were detected during the inline X-ray of the baggage.
