THANE: A 47-year-old man from a village near Bhiwandi was sentenced to three years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) for molesting a tribal middle-aged widow under the SC & ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.
Special judge, G P Shirsat also fined Prakash Andhere Rs 2,000, said prosecutor Rekha Hiwrale.
Hiwrale told the court that on October 20, 2008 while the victim was sleeping in her house with her children, Andhere entered the house at 3am and molested her. When she woke up, he offered her money to not speak about the incident. The moment she raised an alarm, her son woke up and tried to catch hold of Andhere, but he had managed to escape. Subsequently, a case was registered and he was arrested and tried in the case.
The defence counsel contended the prosecution, but after hearing both the sides, the judge relied on the eyewitness’ account and held that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubts the charges.
