GHAZIABAD: The 31-year-old private firm employee arrested for allegedly molesting a US-based journalist in Indirapuram was granted bail by a local court on Monday.
Nishant Kaushik, who allegedly followed the woman in his car in Indirapuram for around 50 minutes, passed lewd comments and touched her inappropriately last Friday, has been asked not to leave the country and cooperate in the police investigation. His lawyer Yogender, however, declined to speak to the media.
The journalist, who had come to India two months ago along with her sister to cover the Lok Sabha polls, has now decided to return to the US. The two sisters had been staying on rent in a flat in Indirapuram since January. Meanwhile, taking cognisance of reports on the alleged molestation, the National Women’s Commission on Tuesday wrote to SSP Upendra Kumar Agrawal and urged him to take “strict” and “immediate action” against the accused. Women’s commission member Kamlesh Gautam told the SSP the commission was “seriously concerned” about the safety and security of women from foreign countries.
“Considering the gravity of the matter, it is requested that a detailed action-taken report in the matter be sent to the commission by e-mail or fax,” she wrote.
Nishant, who was arrested on Friday night after being caught by guards of the housing society where the woman stays, has been slapped charges under IPC sections 354 D (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman).
